Together with Civil Construction Ltd, Queenstown Lakes District Council, TSA Riley, McKenzie and Co, and Engeo we’ve been able to find smart, practical solutions, particularly around ground conditions, that support long-term resilience and great outcomes for future residents.
One standout example of this is our use of an innovative ground improvement technique delivered by Civil Construction, in partnership with Pozzolan Ltd.
Rather than removing large volumes of soil and replacing it with imported fill, the team has strengthened the existing ground by blending natural materials directly into the soil before services were installed. This permanently improves ground performance while significantly reducing liquefaction risk. Although this approach is common on major infrastructure projects, it’s relatively new for residential developments in this region — and it’s already proving its value.
What does that mean in real terms?
- Faster construction timeframes
- Around 150,000m³ of earthworks avoided
- Approximately 2,400 fewer truck movements on local roads
- Reduced pressure on local infrastructure and local dump sites
- Significant carbon savings, including up to 60% fewer heavy machinery operating hours
- Less dust and erosion during construction
- More efficient delivery, helping manage development costs
- A solution built using New Zealand expertise and materials
The project team’s attitude towards coordination collaboration has been instrumental- especially when complex technical decisions need to be made under pressure. Their collaborative style, combined with the responsiveness of Council staff, has helped maintain momentum and build strong, positive relationships ultimately lead to better outcomes for the Woolbrae neighbourhood.
For future residents, much of this mahi happens quietly in the background. But it plays a crucial role in shaping a neighbourhood that’s well planned, resilient, and built to last.
As Woolbrae continues to progress, we’re excited to carry this collaborative approach forward and apply what we’ve learned to future projects across the region. Working as one team has been key to unlocking better outcomes and we can’t wait to share what comes next for Woolbrae.
