The name should reflect our location, our values, and the vision we share for this neighbourhood. It might draw on the natural landscape, local history, te reo Māori, or simply capture the feeling of what this place will become.

Naming Guidelines

A name has the power to give a place its identity, to tell the story of where it came from, what it means to the people who gather there, and how it fits into the land around it. We're looking for something that will feel just as right in fifty years as it does today.

To help guide your thinking, we've put together a few things to keep in mind when crafting your submission. There are no rigid rules here, just a spirit we'd love your entry to reflect.

Reflect the natural environment

Awa Park is defined by its waterways, native plantings, and open green spaces. Names that echo the land and landscape tend to resonate most deeply

Te reo Māori is warmly welcomed

Names in te reo Māori that are meaningful and used with appropriate context are strongly encouraged. Please include a translation and explanation in your entry.

Community over commerce

Names should reflect the spirit of the community, not commercial brands or personal promotions. The name will belong to everyone who calls Awa Park home

Easy to say, easy to remember

A great park name rolls off the tongue and sticks in the memory. Think about how it sounds when someone gives directions, or tells a story about their day there.

One name submission per entry

You may submit one name per entry form. You're welcome to submit multiple entries, but each must be a distinct name with its own reasoning.
